PlayStation Plus Essential is loaded with a good deal of benefits for players to enjoy right now. However, one big one that’s hard to ignore is the bevy of Classics that are playable. Featuring favorites from PlayStation, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3 and even PlayStation Portable libraries, there are a number of great games waiting to be discovered.
But where should you begin? Fret not. Here’s a helpful guide breaking down the five games you should check out on the service right now.
Ridge Racer 2
There are two big reasons this classic Ridge Racer tops the list. First off, it never got a U.S. release, dwelling in Japan on PSP and PlayStation Vita over there for forever. And secondly, it’s been fully optimized for PlayStation 5 and looks better than ever. It still has slight blemishes here and there, but, honestly, it’s the closest thing you’re going to get to a next-gen Ridge Racer…so you may as well enjoy it.
Double Dragon Neon
Even though the game is over a decade old by now, Double Dragon Neon still feels surprisingly fresh. It takes on the classic beat-em-up genre and cranks it to another level with more beat-em-up action, two-player co-op, great visuals and an unforgettable soundtrack. Not to mention the most nefarious end boss of all time, Skullmageddon. Enjoy this one with a friend and get to smacking some thugs around!
Jumping Flash!
A first-person action/adventure where you portray a robot rabbit may not sound like the most enthralling thing ever made. But trust us when we say that, even after all this time, Jumping Flash! is an absolute treasure. The game’s visuals still hold up (for PS1, anyway), and the gameplay is unique and exciting, as you hop around each small but significant world. Watch out for those pesky frogs!
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow
Though the game came out back in 2010, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow is still a nice turning point for the series. Produced by Mercurysteam (Metroid: Samus Returns), Shadow is a tour-de-force in 3D action, as you guide a hero through a devastating God of War-esque journey with enemies big and small. And for good measure, Sir Patrick Stewart lends a bit of narration as well. Oh, and if you have time, check out Lords of Shadow 2 as well. It’s on the service!
The Yakuza Games
We’re still waiting a little while for the next chapter in Yakuza to arrive. So why not go back and play some of the classics that brought us here? Several games in the franchise are available for streaming on PlayStation Plus Essential, and they’re just as great as ever. Beat up thugs, make some new alliances, and even sing a little karaoke as you attempt to rule the streets. Because no one can mess with a good gangster, riiiiight?
Want to win a PlayStation 5 to stream these games on? Because we’re giving one away!
